For many years Island Lake Lodge has been viewed as a winter destination, known for its world renowned Catskiing program.
More recently Island Lake is gaining ground as a premier Rocky Mountain wedding destination. “We’re pleased with how popular our wedding packages have become. As we’re only 3 ½ hours from Calgary we see a lot of couples who work in the city center but love to escape to the mountains and there’s no better place to do that than Island Lake. Even though we are only 14 kms from Fernie, it feels like you are in the remote mountains,” says Marketing Director, Mike McPhee.
Kate and Stuart mesh with Island Lake Lodge perfectly. The mountains and skiing are both very near and dear to their hearts so naturally, they felt Island Lake was the perfect place to spend their special weekend with their family and close friends.
Kate and Stuart first met 11 years ago at Queens University on the rowing team. Kate was pretty smitten with Stuart, but kept her feelings concealed until after they graduated. They stayed in contact while Stuart was overseas working in Norway and after nine months of work abroad, Stuart decided to return to Canada to go back to school (luckily for Kate!).
Right after the initial wedding tour at Island Lake Lodge (ILL), Stuart’s mom, Anne, pulled Kate aside and confided in her that upon her first visit to ILL many years ago, she told her young son Stuart “I’ve found the place where you should get married when you grow up – now all you have to do is find the girl!”
What was the most memorable moment on your wedding day?
Our First Look – this moment was shared by just us in to woods and was so magical. Our photographer stayed back and encouraged us to take a moment to just be together before the excitement of our ceremony!
What was your favourite part of planning your wedding?
Bringing together all the family and friends that made, designed and arranged elements of our special day! Our neighbor Donna built the beautiful wedding arch and provided all the peonies from her massive garden, she kept them alive in a cold storage unit for 2 weeks and transported them to Fernie.
As soon as they arrived on the Thursday night before the wedding, Kate accidentally locked them in the cold room and had to call a locksmith to come and spring them from jail so Stuart’s sister Elizabeth could get to work arranging them! Elizabeth arranged all the flowers, bouquets, flower clips for the bride’s hair, and boutonnières.
Tell us a neat fact about your wedding day:
Stuart: Kate’s cousin Adrienne sewed the date of the wedding into Kate’s wedding dress as her “something blue”.
Kate: Stuart biked up to the lodge on the morning of the ceremony with a few of the groomsmen.
What wedding advice can you share with future couples?
One thing that we would recommend is to do a weekend event with all your guests at an intimate destination so that the bride and groom can spend as much time as we did with our wedding guests. Every meal and bit of spare time from the arrival/rehearsal dinner on Friday night, through Brunch on Sunday morning was an opportunity to spend quality time catching up with our guests while doing things we love like hiking, canoeing, biking, etc!
Located on 7,000 acres of private, pristine land Island Lake specializes in boutique mountain weddings of up to 100 guests. The lodge offers catering, bar service and accommodations as well as an on-site event coordinator.
